King’s I Have a Dream Speech as a Literary Work
The speech I have a Dream was delivered by Dr. Martin Luther King Jnr. on August 28,
1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial as a culmination to the March on Washington.
Considered the best speech ever made in history, King’s was a passionate appeal in the clamor
for equal rights and justice for the black people of America and the speech was designed to
inspire change in both black and white Americans. According to Wilkenfeld (3) the speech does
not exhibit any explicit central claim although it encompasses various foundations that make
King’s arguments clear and comprehensible. Accordingly, the speech elaborates on a number of
claims that combine to form an exquisite work of literature whose impact continues to
reverberate many years after the speech was delivered. The potential claims in the speech are
highlighted below.
First, it elaborates on America’s broken promises to the blacks who have been the
backbone of the country’s prosperity. Second, it decries the fact that black freedom is still
limited long after their emancipation from slavery. Third, it held recognition that the time to
institute urgent changes had come although King emphasized that such change should not be
sought by violence or hatred but by love. Finally, King asserted that the message of freedom for
all Americans, including blacks, ought to be spread across the entire nation. Accordingly, the
speech sought to highlight and decry the economic and racial injustices occasioned to the blacks
that resulted in their extreme poverty at a time the nation was experiencing enormous prosperity.
