  1. Answer the questions below regarding other challenges that need to be addressed with population growth. Use the data in Table 3. Energy Use and Population for “A.”
  1. How does the data presented in the table suggest that the problem of over population involves more than a simple increase in the number of people? (3 points)
  2. What else, besides the size of the population should be considered when discussing resource use? (3 points)
  3. How can the factors and changes noted in “B above” be expected to affect malnutrition and hunger? (3 points)

INTERPRETING POPULATION PYRAMIDS

2

What are the key issues (environmental, resource, social, and/or governmental) that are
influencing the population patterns for China and Japan?
China
Four major issues are influencing the population patterns in China. These are the
unavailability of arable land for agriculture, the presence of water and air pollution, the presence
of cancer villages, and the one-child policy for the people. Like in the case of the one-child policy,
families are limited in the number of children they can sire. There are cancer villages that lack the
appropriate amenities and resources to help in the control of the disease thereby increasing the
mortality rate of the people.
Japan
Social factors represent the key issue influencing the population in Japan whereby the
largest population is for the old people in that among every three individuals, there is one old
person. Some other factors include the policy on urban planning and whaling and fishery effect
which ensure that the mortality rate for the people is reduced.

Would a demographer (population studier) in 1975 have been able to make accurate
predictions for 2016? (2 points)

Indeed, it would have been hard in predicting the accurate change in temperature within
such a period although through the various innovations that have been occurring during the time.
