WK 6: Spiritual Assessment
Spiritual assessment tools are used in collaboration with other tools used to assess the
physical condition of the patient. Healthcare is meant to not only cater for the physical needs
of the ailing but also their emotional and spiritual needs. Spirituality plays an important part
in an individual’s health. It influences the perceptions they have towards their health, which
can affect overall outcomes in care. Spirituality can be both religious and non-religious. Most
recently, the Joint Commission on Accreditation (JACHO) mandated all hospitals to conduct
initial spiritual assessments. Studies have also shown that most patients rely on their religious
beliefs to cope with their illnesses. A spiritual assessment is imperative because it enables the
individual to assess the spiritual needs of his or her patient. Some of the most useful spiritual
assessment tools include the HOPE and FICA tools.
A spiritual assessment is meant to identify the various spiritual beliefs of the patient
as well as the spiritual needs he or she has. It also offers insight into a person’s spirituality
and its influence on his or her overall health. Most importantly, this form of assessment
enables professionals to identify underlying causes of an individual’ deteriorating health that
could not be identified otherwise. This procedure is conducted in the form of a conversation,
in which the professional is advised to let the client reveal things about themselves as they
move along with the procedure (Laudet, Morgen& White, 2006). A spiritual assessment tool
is used to enable nurses and other healthcare practitioners to conduct this type of evaluation.
The HOPE assessment tool is one of the most popular tools used in healthcare
practice. ...
