AMERICA NOW https://art2
Art is “inherently contradictory,” says Edgar Arceneaux. “Its nature is to ask new questions.” Given that, how are artists answering the question: What is America today? Recent years in the United States have proven to be tumultuous, and yet as these historical markers continue to shape the discourse of the new normal, artists are responding with powerful work that is representative of the times. “The discomfort of being a person living and working in the United States is a place where these paintings were being made from,” explains Julie Mehretu.
The artists in this playlist respond to the dynamic nature of the United States and its parallels. Unpacking colonial histories, reinterpreting news pundits, and celebrating cultural diversity, their work helps paint a picture of a shared American experience, as told from a variety of perspectives. As Raúl de Nieves states, “we don’t want to go back in time, we want to move forward.”
The class divides itself in groups of two. Chose an artists position from the playlist. Explain your choice. What interests you about the artist? Do you see a connection to your own work and if yes, which one? Prepare a statement and upload it on Canvas for the next class.

America. With the aim of driving the state into further adjustments in modernization and
globalization, the artist is more interested in creating and designing new exhibitions, in
encouraging the American community into more of new developments. His motivation and
desire for growth in the art field is one aspect that interests one most, as this encourages the
American community to desire and work for greater changes in the community. From his works
of art one, can feel a strong connection through their work, in that one is inspired to drive the
American community into more of the future aspirations as a State. Additionally, through Trevor
Paglen’s work of art one can feel a connection between the artworks in the sense that one is
motivated to focus on the future of the American artwork, and thus either modify the old or
