Based upon current evidence-based research, explain how cultural competence
improves health outcomes.
Culturally competent care means having care, which considers diversity, especially in
patient population. Improving health outcomes by providing quality healthcare, equitable health
care, and reducing health disparities remains an essential objective for America's healthcare
system. Research studies insist that this can only be attainable through effective cultural
competence. Cultural competence is a foundational pillar that helps reduce unbiased quality care
and culturally sensitive care (Brathwaite, 2020). Cultural competency interventions are known
to change the health provider's behaviors, decision making and communication, clinical systems,
and patient-provider relationships to result in effective patient outcomes. Most of the
interventions that cultural competence provide aims to improve care, especially for patients
within patient-centered medical homes or medical facilities.
Identify the differences between cultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, and cultural
competence.
Cultural awareness is simply the sensitivity to the differences and similarities, which tend
to exist between various cultures. It also incorporates sensitivity to use effective
communications, especially with different cultural group members. Cultural competence is the
aspect of respecting individuals with varied or any cultural background. The concept also means
fostering a non-discriminatory atmosphere within society (Brathwaite, 2020). Further, it means
the accessibility of services to ensure that the needs of individuals with unalike backgrounds are
put into consideration. On the other hand, cultural sensitivity means culturally respectful
interpersonal skills (Brathwaite, 2020). It also means respectful non-verbal and verbal

communications and encounters between a client and a professional to incorporate each party's
rights, especially when expressing their culture. In simple words, it means the willingness to
understand individuals from different cultures.
·
Discuss why geographic regions, such as Appalachia, are often associated with a
particular culture.
In geography and anthropology, a cultural area means geography with a homogenous
human activity. Most of the activities tend to be linked with ethnolinguistic groups, more so the
kind of territory it tends to inhibit. In this context, Appalachia regions tend to be linked to
specific cultures because of the spheres of influences within those regions. Geographically,
Appalachia remains a distinctive region (Brathwaite, 2020). Despite the isolation that is linked
to it, the area is still known to have specific cultures. In such cases, the previous group that
inhabited the area determines the current culture of such regions.
