Description

This is a simple assignment, but you will need to record yourself presenting your Technical Definition topic with your phone or a camera. You will do your presentation in 3-4 sentences. I recommend that you first write your presentation down and practice it. When you read aloud what you have written, you will notice that a written sentence does not always read well. So you will need to tweak the sentences for your oral presentation. Follow the sequence below to structure your presentation: • Sentence 1: Introduce yourself briefly. For example: Hello, I am Dr. ABC and I am Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Language and Literature at university UWM. • Sentence 2: Provide a sentence definition of your technical definition topic following the correct sentence definition pattern. Technical term → category → distinguishing characteristic • Sentences 3-4: Provide any additional clarifications that you think help to explain your technical definition topic. Remember that with this presentation, you are locking down your topic for your Technical Definition Assignment. Also, keep in mind that the topic you choose must have been introduced into the field in the last 15 years. So your technical definition topic has to be relatively new.

Presenting Your Technical Definition Topic This week, you will work on the Technical Definition Presentation Assignment. This assignment is worth 50 points, and is due by 11:59 pm on Sunday, Oct. 18. Follow the sequence below to structure your presentation: • • • Sentence 1: Introduce yourself briefly. For example: Hello, I am Dr. Aniruddha Mukhopadhyay and I am Assistant Professor of English in the Department of Language and Literature at Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Sentence 2: Provide a sentence definition of your technical definition topic following the correct sentence definition pattern. Technical term → category → distinguishing characteristic Sentences 3-4: Provide any additional clarifications that you think help to explain your technical definition topic. Remember that with this presentation, you are locking down your topic for your Technical Definition Assignment. Also, keep in mind that the topic you choose must have been introduced into the field in the last 15 years. So your technical definition topic has to be relatively new. Once you have practiced your presentation, simply record yourself making the presentation with your phone or a camera. Don’t just read out your presentation when making the recording. Here are some tips on presenting properly: • • • Dress in business casual clothing Speak slowly and breathe regularly Enunciate your words Don’t worry about the presentation. You will be able to re-record yourself if you don’t like the previous attempt. But don’t worry about making your presentation perfect. I want you to have some experience of presenting, and as long as you make an honest effort, I will give you full credit for this assignment. Uploading Your Presentation to Youtube After you have recorded your presentation, upload it to your Youtube account. I recommend that you create a Youtube account with your university email address for professional purposes. I found phone recordings easy to upload onto Youtube. Once you have recorded a video on your phone, if you go to the “Share” link, one of the choices should be Youtube. If your phone does not have the Youtube app, you may need to download it. Of course, I have an android phone, so I’m not exactly sure how you upload videos from an iphone. However, a quick google search shows lots of instructions and instructional videos on Youtube, on how to upload videos from both androids and iphones. If you recorded the video with your camera or if you want to upload your phone video differently, simply transfer the video to your computer. Then log on to Youtube and click on the Create a Video or post button at the top. From the dropdown menu, select “Upload video” and then click on “Select files to upload.” This will allow you to browse through your computer to select the video file. Remember to make your video upload “Unlisted.” And then, simply go to the Discussion Board forum for “Technical Definition Presentation” on Blackboard, click on “Create,” and copy-paste the link to your Youtube video. This will avoid any issues with file size. As long as you have your video “Unlisted” on Youtube, no one will be able to access it without the link posted on the Discussion Board. After you have posted the link to your video, check out your classmates’ presentations. In order to complete the Technical Definition Presentation assignment, you must watch and respond to (in 50 words each) at least 3 of your classmates’ presentations. You can make a comment or ask a question. Reach out to me at kuam2132@tamuk.edu if you have any questions. Email me or call me at 361-239-8273 if you need to brainstorm your technical definition topic with me, or if you need any help with the presentation.
