Othello and Manipulation
When it comes to Othello there is no question that he has become the pawn of Iago. In the 3rd
Act, Scene 3 which is also sometimes called the seduction scene, Iago convinces Othello that his
wife Desdemona has had an affair. The manipulation occurs when there is an exchange that Iago
and Othello listen to from off of the stage between Cassio and Desdemona. The discussion is one
that Iago uses as a form of manipulation in that moment commenting, “Ha, I like not that.” Iago
spends a long time with verbal repartee convincing Othello that there is a relationship between
Desdemona and Cassio. While Othello does ask for proof there is none that Iago has he spends
the time instead playing up all of Othello’s fears.
One thing about the relationship between Othello and Desdemona that is important to note is that
Desdemona is the daughter of a wealthy family and she is blonde and fair skinned. Othello is a
