Topic Choices:

  1. For this topic choice, re- read Alexie's essay "Indian Education," paying close attention to the ending sentence of each extended example. Choose three of the ending sentences to use as quotations to exemplify a similar experience in your own educational journey. Each body paragraph should be developed around this quotation and should focus on a particular incident. Make sure to correctly punctuate and cite the quotation. You should also have a Works Cited page at the end of the paper that cites the Alexie short story. See chapter 18, "Documenting Sources: MLA" in Patterns, specifically "Guidelines for Formatting Quotations" for in-text citations and "Essay in an Anthology" for writing the Works Cited page.
  2. For this topic choice, re-read the Tufekci essay, "Why the Post Office Makes America Great." This topic choice comes from "Writing Workshop, " question 2 following the Tufekci essay, page 223, which reads as follows: Assume you are writing to a Facebook friend in another country who is not familiar with American Culture. Explain some things you take for granted that would be alien to this person - for example, all-you-can-eat buffets, drive-thru pharmacies, and Uber. Make sure you include specific examples to illustrate your points. Be sure to reference the essay "Why the Post Office Makes America Great," and acknowledge Tufekci as your source. Include parenthetical documentation for references to her essay and a works cited page. (See chapter 18 for information on MLA Documentation.) Remember that when summarizing and paraphrasing, you still must cite the source even though paraphrases and summaries are not placed in quotation marks. (See chapter 17, "Integrating Sources and Avoiding Plagiarism.")

Studying in a foreign country
Winning a scholarship to study in a foreign country is seen as a privilege to a student,
especially in African countries. However, this is not always the case, as many students face many
challenges associated with difficulties in studying and adapting to the culture and tradition in the
new country. The environment and people around someone always perceive his/her language,
ethnicity, race, and country of origin. Besides, perception and stereotyping may be either positive
or negative. Alexi’s essay “Indian education” discusses several examples regarding his
experiences that can be used to exemplify similar experiences in my education journey. Therefore
this essay will expound on the story of Mike, an African student who got a scholarship to study in
California, America, to illustrate challenges faced by the students who go to seek education abroad.
Firstly, Mike was a hardworking student in the class and graduated with a first-class degree
in mechanical engineering. He won a scholarship to study for a master's degree in mechanical
engineering at California University, America. When he landed in California, the thing was totally
different from his expectations (Alexie 280). On the first day, he was thrown out by a conductor
because his color was different from other passengers (Alexie 280). The passenger called him a
monkey simply because he was black (Alexie 279). This scene frustrated him so much. He arrived
at school very late when the admission process was over. At the university gate, the security guards

interviewed him for almost an hour. He stayed at the gate because the guards were suspicious of
how the black person got access to this famous university, which usually admitted whites as the
majority population.
Secondly, one day something strange happened to mike when he went to the toilet and
forgot to zip his trousers. Mike thought that this was a usual thing for a normal human being to
forget zipping trouser. But this time, he was in a foreign country and not in Africa and did not
understand the culture was different from his understanding. However, the laws here were applied
selectively but not equally. The law was in favor of the whites and not the blacks. .When classmates
saw him with his zip wide open, a case was filed that he attempted rape (Alexie 280). He was taken
to a court of law and was fined two hundred dollars. His lawyer defended him, but because the
judges were American he had to face the consequences (Teichler 399). Mike was surprised by the
judgment made by judges since he expected to be heard fairly in the court. He had to toil to get the
money to settle the fine by organizing a fundraising through the help of his friends. Funny enough,
on the fundraising day, the school administration denied him to conduct this event. He only got
support from a few blacks who stood together with him to solve this problem.
Finally, mike and other black students were forced to wash and clean the whites' hostels
over the weekend (Alexie ...
