Development and Strategic Planning in Healthcare
1. Key role of the service delivery portion of the value chain in medicine today
The service delivery portion of the supply chain in medicine deals with provision of
medical products and services and delivering them to customers in the most efficient way
possible. The key role of service delivery in medicine therefore, is to ensure maintenance of
patient safety and improved quality of care so as to provide value and satisfaction for the
consumers, practitioners and those who pay for the services (Swayne, Duncan, & Ginter, 2006).
Examples of value adding service delivery strategies that I might consider implementing
in my own healthcare facility or program include the pre-service and point of service strategies.
Pre-service involves researching and planning on services that will be offered to the customers
and the target market for delivery of such services as well as the design, branding, pricing,
promotion and distribution activities that focus on service delivery (Swayne, Duncan, & Ginter,
2006).
Point of service delivery strategy will revolve around customizing clinical operations to
enhance customer satisfaction at affordable costs as well as innovating new ideas and ways of
doing things to improve the quality of care. This strategy will also deal with conducting market
research to identify customer expectations and make quality improvements to meet such
expectations and ensure patient satisfaction (Swayne, Duncan, & Ginter, 2006).
2. Explain how competitive advantage can be gained from within the organization
through service delivery strategies
Service delivery strategies include both the value adding and support service delivery
strategies that are very critical for the success of a healthcare facility. These service delivery

healthcare services and coming up with action plans that will help a healthcare facility meet the
unmet expectations of customers in the market. These strategies help to develop and shape the
behavior patterns, working environment, communication flows, human resources as well as
financial needs that can help a healthcare organization deliver the best in the market (Swayne,
Duncan, & Ginter, 2006).
A healthcare facility can utilize its value adding service delivery strategies mainly the
pre-service, point-of-service or the after-service activities to differentiate its healthcare model
from that of other competitors. Value adding support strategies on the other hand help a
healthcare organization to develop action plans that are key to the accomplishment of
competitive strategies (Swayne, Duncan, & Ginter, 2006).
Service delivery strategies play a great role in identifying market gaps and customer
