immigrated to the United States and account for up to forty million people who live in the United
States. About every country in the world has an immigrant representation in the United States.
Waters & Pineau (2015) present that up to 13.7% of the United States population comprises
people who have moved into America from their native nations. Even though they live in the
United States for lengthy periods, not all immigrants are legal citizens, with a majority being
illegal and citizens.
To become a fully naturalized U.S citizen as an immigrant, one must apply and meet
specific criteria (Waters & Pineau, 2015; Blau, Mackie & Panel, 2017). Depending on one's
country of origin, naturalization is more accessible than others. For instance, it is hard for lawful
immigrants of Mexican descent to be naturalized, compared to the Chinese lawful citizen
naturalization—the Chinese account for most of the total immigrants into the United States.
Overall, the approach to immigration poses a challenge to various groups in the United States.
