Trends in Informatics Case Study

[WLOs: 1, 3, 4] [CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 5]

Prior to beginning work on this assignment review Chapters 29, 33, and 36 of Health Informatics: An Interprofessional Approach.

Formulate a paper addressing trends in health informatics using the address the following prompts:

  • Discuss the benefits and challenges of simulation technology as a technology trend.
  • Given future directional trends in informatics discussed in Chapter 36 of your text such as nanotechnology, predictive analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT), select a trend that you view to be most important to our society today. Provide a rationale for your choice.
  • Analyze the Health Information Technology Governence Activities and Processes summery discussed in Chapter 29 of your text (Box 29.1). Reflecting on your Ashford University major of study, discuss how an organizational leader in health care and/or health and human services would use these activities to prioritize informatics projects related to implementing an informatics trend discussed in Chapter 36.

Discuss the benefits and challenges of simulation technology as a technology trend.
Benefits
Learning simulation, particularly in the healthcare setting, emanates as an appropriate
method of instilling knowledge in individuals. The simulation process involves simulating a
scenario to practice different actions and responses to real life and is exceptionally useful in
knowledge retention. Knowledge is not a theory that an individual requires to apply in actual
situations. Incorporating simulation into the learning process can act as a significant real-time
practice many employers require (Rimon, 2016). Simulations are useful and proven tools to
augment learning and creating an enjoyable and safe learning environment where failure and
exploitation are rife. Additionally, unlike several learning methods, simulations are not
standalone tools. Conversely, simulations are useful when combined with other learning
practices like coaching sessions and quizzes. Contrary to traditional wisdom, simulations are
easily incorporated into learning management and do not espouse any management burden.
Challenges
Together with the various advantages that simulation technology espouses, this
technology also has its challenges. One challenge of simulation in healthcare concerns
incomplete mimicking of human systems. Human systems are diverse and complex. Thus,
instruments and models cannot match humans completely. Additionally, inappropriately
designed simulators can promote negative learning. This kind of learning can also encourage
shortcuts like omitting safety procedures and patient consent. This shortcoming may foster
artificial communication rather than a genuine one (Krishnan et al., 2017). Additionally, learners
accustomed to this kind of learning will always approach simulator differently from real-life

situations. Simulators are also expensive to install, particularly the high fidelity ones. The cost is
both in purchasing and maintenance, thus rendering them unaffordable for many institutions.
