what problems did Madison foresee for the citizens of the US If the government did indeed mandate that citizens could only practice one religion over all forms of religion?

Madison feared that any involvement in, or with, religion by the government could lead to the establishment of an official state religion (as had occurred in some of the European nations).  He advocated for the complete separation of church and state, and maintained that just as religion did not need government, neither did government need religion.
