1. Similarities and Difference of Transcendentalism and Dark Romanticism
Both movements came up as a reaction to the period’s laws, strict traditions and religious
rules. Transcendentalism was a reaction that was against religious traditions and dogma that were
overpowering. Romanticism on the other hand was a partial reaction against objective reasoning
and realism. These two philosophies were against Calvinism which was a religious doctrine
which claimed that human outcomes are predetermined. They both had a significant emphasis on
the individual and inspiration from the nature as well. They strongly encouraged individuals to
discover their own truth and be ruled by it rather than obeying the constructs of that period.
Religion was one of their major differences. Transcend entalism was basically a religious
movement where they believed that God could be experienced through intuition since He was
