Description

Teacher requirements:

•Individual methods which are available within an ethnographic study include: participant observation, interviews and surveys. All of these ethnographic methods can be very valuable in gaining a deeper understanding of a design problem. Usability practitioners often make use of these in order to develop their understanding of the relevant domain, audience(s), processes, goals and context(s) of use.

•WHO WILL YOU INTERVIEW? We are a bubble and it’s important to have input from those outside of our bubble.

•WHAT TYPE OF SURVEY CAN YOU CREATE? What audience should you target?

•WHERE and WHAT and WHO WILL YOU OBSERVE? You all know what you have access to physically so be realistic with this.

•We need to have all of this nailed down soon. Deadline for submission OF YOUR PLAN is October 30th. And then in November you will be in action with ethnographic research.

Topic of my research paper: The influence of heritage and the vernacular on interior architecture practices.

subtopic: what countries? You should focus on three or four distinct cultures so that you have great comparison opportunities

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH The influence of heritage and the vernacular on interior architecture practices 2 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH Interior Architecture Research This research holds that interior architecture's primary focus is the interior design, which is determined by the construction structure. The concept of interior architecture had its roots from history during its application in traditional vernacular buildings. The primary purpose for the construction and design of the interior in a specific way was to stimulate individuals also to behave and co-act as the setting requires. Therefore, this means the design had symbolic meaning in the traditional native heritage passed on from one generation to another (Ellisa & Toga, 2014). Besides this, the design also integrates cultural rules and regulations that individuals have to follow. The concept of heritage indicates a direct connection between the symbolic features and a system of communication. Thus, this enhances the study of the interior design of vernacular buildings. Hence, it enabled the development of a theoretical framework that is significant in reviving regionalism architecture. This research focuses on the Wae Rebo village in Flores Island, whereby it scrutinizes the interiority case of the house units constructed in this region by the native people. Wae Rebo is a mountain village located in a remote area with its altitude and 1,200 meters. Its primary location is in eastern India within the dense rain forest mountain. The native individuals construct houses that are identical in their conical shape and have an approximate height of 13 meters (Ellisa & Toga, 2014). This kind of construction shows that the individuals inhabiting the area have fixed traditional layout, function, and form. The design expresses cultural orientation and key ideas through ordered spatial and structure of housing units in this connection. This research obtains key information and data from the village through observation and recording. The research shows an association between 3 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH local cosmologies and domestic space in the area; hence houses are constructed as a macrocosm and microcosm. In this case, the physical features that are easily noticeable include the house structure, a fixed feature, the interior setting, a semi-fixed feature, and the combination of attributes and people that make up the non-fixed features. Therefore, this means that an individual's behavior in a specific setting makes up the symbolic meaning. Upon entering the housing unit, any individual should leave sandals at the ladder. The primary leaving space in the house interior Is the ground floor. However, the interior has two divisions; the Front (lutur) and the rear (molang). At the centre of the lutur lies a structural column. It is at this position that the head of the house sits facing the house entrance. On another matter, the front half perimeter performs the guest's reception function, whereas the other half behind the structural column is the kitchen area. Besides this, the central structural column lies a bamboo ladder that individuals use to access other parts of the house on top (Ellisa & Toga, 2014). The floor levels on top store materials, crops, and seeds, such that each level has a specific substance that it stores. Therefore, this means that the conical housing provides shelter for the entire family, along with their belongings. The interior arrangement is similar to all families since there is also a similar nature. The only difference that distinguishes the houses from each other is the technique and material used in their construction. In this connection, the house interior is significant in expressing lifestyle and family structure. Apart from this, the house interior determines the configuration and form of symbolic meaning. For example, the cubicle room purpose may be; a newly married couple center, a baby nurturing area, and a female sleeping place, among other functions. 4 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH 5 INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE RESEARCH Reference Link to the article; https://www.researchgate.net/publication/308357894_INTERIOR_ARCHITECTURE_O F_VERNACULAR_MBARU_NIANG_OF_WAE_REBO_Toga_H_Panjaitan_Evawani_ Ellisa Ellisa, Evawani & Pandjaitan, Toga. Cultural heritage carries the real lifestyle of ancient people in a particular society. To
understand different societal heritages, specific aspects of lifestyle should be considered in
evaluating the process. In my case, I am interested in finding how heritage and vernacular play in
the design of interior architecture in ancient Indian society (Widiastuti, 2018). The ...
