Module 1: Introduction to Organizational Behavior
Entry 1
"How can studying OB (Organizational Behavior) help you to be a more effective manager?"
Studying organizational behavior has demonstrated to me the importance of
understanding other people because people have an innate desire to be understood. Part of
leadership deals with people from different cultural backgrounds, necessitating learning how to
engage in interpersonal interactions with diverse backgrounds. Consequently, I enrolled in a
leadership development program to improve my interpersonal skills in various workplace
environments. I learned the techniques for communicating in a culturally diverse work
environment to avoid interpersonal misunderstandings and conflict. The leadership techniques
helped me learn how to use cultural sensitivity when giving employee feedback. For example,
the Chinese custom of saving face necessitates 360-feedback during employee appraisals to
avoid inflicting disgrace (Siu, Kwan & Zeng, 2016). The 360-feedback approach involves
considering giving anonymous and confidential feedback to employees, thereby avoiding
eliciting conflict, especially among people whose cultural background is sensitive to criticism.
Therefore, I engaged in the leadership development program in my practical skills to become a
better listener that considers the cultural complexity of a diverse workplace environment.
Consequently, the program helped me develop the interpersonal complexities that could improve
my workplace experience when dealing with people from diverse backgrounds. The leadership
development programs could improve by emphasizing listening over talking. My leadership
development program experience suggested that team leaders should listen to lower-level
employees since it could enhance organizational outcomes by diversifying the ideas available
during decision-making processes.

"Four behavioral sciences contribute to the understanding of OB: psychology, social psychology,
sociology, and anthropology. How does understanding each of these help managers?"
Psychology in organizational behavior involves studying employee motivation, reward
mechanisms, and formal control of employees in teams, groups, or individuals. It can help
provide insights into how managers should act and develop in their various roles and
responsibilities. Psychology can help organizations understand how they affect employees'
behavior, feelings, and thoughts, thereby developing human resource management strategies that
increase job satisfaction and reduce employee turnover. According to Flood (2017), "While
psychologists focus on a micro approach to examine individuals, sociologists take a macro view"
(p. 2). In other words, social psychology focuses on the interactions of groups of people and their
influence on organizational outcomes. Some of the areas social psychology can help managers
improve their outcomes include business culture, how different people influence each other's
behaviors, intergroup conflict minimization, effective communication strategies, and formulating
goals and o...
