Human beings are one of the critical concepts of the Neuman Systems Model. This model
perceives human beings as an open system that interacts with internal and external
environmental forces and stressors (Alligood, 2017). As an open system, a human being is a
constant change from a state of system stability or towards illness of varying degrees. Another
key concept of the model is the environment in which human beings live. The model identifies
three environmental stressors that affect a client; internal, external, and created. The internal
environment comprise of factors within the client, such as body temperature, genetic makeup,
mental and emotional health status and others (Alligood, 2017). The external environment is
made up of factors that are outside the client, while the created environment refers to support for
protective coping.
Nursing is also a key concept in the Neuman Systems Model. Neuman claims that
nursing is concerned with the whole person and all the variables affecting an individual's
response to stress. The Neuman model claims each client has distinct characteristics and
circumstances, and an individual responds within a limited range to their environment. The
model also views stressors as essential components of human beings since they influence health
outcomes and overall wellbeing. The model claims that several known and unknown stressors
