History of the American Academic Education
The American Academic Education has evolved and improved over the years and the
changes have been positively impacted its quality and delivery. There have been three major
historical periods in American Academic Education namely; the Progressive period, the
Modern period, and the RE- assessment period. In the three periods, there have been changes
in the law, enactment of new laws, formulation of theories, and decisions from courts that
have contributed to the Academic Education. The changes in law, inventions, theories, and
case laws have been the major events in the three historical periods in American Academic
Education and have informed the basis of the quality, content, curriculum, delivery mode,
and system of today’s teaching and learning.
Progressive Period
In September 1889, Jane Addams opened a Hull House in an Old Mansion in
Chicago. It was opened to serve European immigrants who had arrived in the country. The
Hull house became the first settlement in the United States and its main goal was to form a
place where women would share with the poor people in the neighborhood knowledge and
skills ranging from arts, literature, and basic skills (Longo, 2005). The impact of the Hull
House was that it became an avenue that offered education to people who didn’t have access
to quality education.
In 1916 there was the founding of the America Federation of teachers which
