Gastritis is characterized by an inflammatory irritation or lining erosion in the stomach. It
may be acute or chronic, depending on the infection period of the patient. The stomach has a
lining that is protected from gastric juice corrosion by secretion of mucus. The juice helps in the
breakdown of proteins by the enzyme pepsin. Therefore, once the lining wears out, the protective
cells are lost.
The 50-year old man case is suffering from chronic gastritis. The man has symptoms that
have prevailed for a year following the loss of his job. Chronic gastritis is characterized by the
loss of appetite, indigestion, and agitation in case the patient takes a small portion of food.
