Introduction
In the United States, a variety of groups meet the requirements of being described as a
social group. The groups are specifically qualified if the definition of social groups as employed
by Platow and Grace (2012) is used. According to the scholars, social groups are groups of
people who share some similarities and have a sense of unity. Therefore, social groups are
socially constructed and hence among the groups that fit into the definition include ethnic
groups, racial groups, and people of similar economic classes, among others. Therefore, to
minimize confusion, it is important to discuss one of the different types of social classifications
that exist in the United States of America at a given time. In the regard, the people of the United
States of America are made of different ethnic groups that are socially identifiable due to the rich
history as well as similarities that they share. The ethnicities include the Latinos, African
Americans, the European Americans, and Asian Americans among others. One particular group
that is specifically interesting to study is the African Americans. The reason is not just because
they are a minority group in the United States of America, but due to their rich history and
diversity.
Thesis Statement
The African Americans are also called the black Americans or afro-Americans. The
names are given due to their descent from Africa as well as their color. The people of black color
who descended from places other than Africa are also called black Americans. Nevertheless, the
culture of the social group is mostly borrowed from the people of western and central Africa,
especially the Mandinka people found in Mali, Ghana, and other African countries. African
