Prenatal Genetic Testing
Introduction
This prenatal genetic tests are forms of genetic screening done to women. They are
done in the first three months of pregnancy. They are done to evaluate the risk for genetic
disorders in the unborn baby. The first screening of the trimester is done between the 10 th and
13th week of pregnancy. It involves measuring substances level in the mother’s blood and an
ultrasound is obtained. These tests can also be done in the second trimester. The information got
from the screening tests used with other risk factors like family history, ethical background and
woman’s age, can be used to calculate the odds that determine whether the fetus will be born
with genetic disorders. Some of the disorders are, sickle cell anemia, Down syndrome or cystic
fibrosis (Mossler, 2014).
Statement of Thesis
It has been discussed that prenatal genetic test is important and has many benefits like
prevention of disabilities and disorders as opposed to risks like death of the mother or health
problems to the mother. The question is, should it be included in the prenatal care unit?
In this research, we will look at the benefits of the prenatal genetic testing as opposed to
