ONLINE MUSEUM VISIT GUIDELINES

This project will involve printing screens of the online museum you visit and writing a critique. Basic guidelines:

1. Screen print the homepage of the museum (where did you go?), and include:
   1. The hours the museum is open
   2. Is there a cost? How much?
   3. Best times, or discounted times to visit?
   4. What kind of art is housed there (media, time period, etc.)?
      
2. Are there any special exhibits (those exhibits not a part of the museum’s permanent collection)?
   1. Is there an extra fee for these exhibits? How much?
   2. How long will the exhibit be there?

Part One: Objective Description

You must state the name and theme of the exhibit you attended. Select one work and give the artist’s name and the title of the work (always UNDERLINE the titles of art works). If it is untitled, that is its title (untitled)!

Now, analyze this work in objective detail, commenting on its physical properties of line, color, texture, balance, shapes, space, etc. Describe the subject matter, noting relationships between subjects and background – or is it a ground? Is there shading, a light source, the illusion of 3-D space, or is it an all-over pattern of non-representative lines or shapes? What do you see when you look objectively at it? Use terms from class.

Part two: Subjective Reaction

The second step will be to give your subjective reaction to the work and your personal interpretation of what it is about. You may be as subjective as you like, stating what emotions it evokes, what elements make you feel that way, and why you were attracted to the work.

Part three: Objective Comparison of Formal Elements

The third part will contain your comparison of a second work in the selected online museum to the first one. Choose a work that is different from the first – perhaps by a different artist or in a much different style. Cite its artist, title, and medium; then give a general objective description, comparing the similarities in formal elements to the first, and then the differences. How are they alike and different? Be sure to choose something that leads itself to comparison. It is possible to compare a sculpture with a painting.
