Gender Inequality and Gender discrimination in the Philippines and India
Sub-section 1: Overview
Philippines
About the World Economic Forum Global Gender Index in 2018 Philippines was
ranked as number eight out of the 10 best performers (David, Albert & Vizmanos, 2018). In
the respective study, 149 countries were examined concerning economic participation, health
and survival, opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, and artificial
intelligence (AI). The Philippines is currently identified as the only nation in Asia that has
attained such a ranking, with approximately 97 percent of its total female population
identified as literate with a majority with studies in Business Administration, among other
related courses.
For decades the Philippines has followed the matriarchal system where the inherited
property, positions of power, and military poses were equally shared among men and women
in the community. These norms have allowed the women in the Philippines society to have a
greater say compared to other women in the Asian region (David, Albert & Vizmanos,
2018).
Traditionally there is no concept of dowry. All that is required from the groom's
family is to showcase the husband to take care of the wife by organizing a meal to be eaten
by both parties. Recently, there have been different laws that have further favored women.

they have an option to take additional 30 days of leave without pay, and once settled, they
can resume work in their original post (Bernarte, Acedegbega, Fadera, & Yopyop, 2018).

3
2016). Several parameters are used to rank India gender equality, such as the gender
development index, which has not performed well given the high dependence on economic
growth rates. For instance, despite India's economy growing, there has been a decrease in the
female labor workforce across the country from an estimated 34 percent to 27 pe...
