In the famous study Performed by Richard Easterlin and the University of Pennsylvania in 1974 it was concluded that although richer people are happier than poor people, the rich countries seem to be unhappier than the poorer ones. Currently two recent professors stated that this statement known as the Easterlin paradox wasn’t true and that it was a very fact that rich people are happier than poor people, as countries get richer they tend to get happier. Pointing out this fact over 35 years ago, Easterlin had little data to work with therefore, Stevenson and Wolfers drew conclusions and gathered up data from poor and rich countries over time. Public opinion surveys and other studies show that life satisfaction is higher in richer countries. In the United States people who make a salary of 250,000 a year are reported to be very happy compared to incomes that make less than 30,000 a year. In the final study Easterlin now concludes that people in wealthy countries do report more happiness than those in poorer countries. Throughout my paper I will discuss the role of money in a person’s work and personal life and whether this is an issue organizations worry about, I will also emphasize on financial incentives and whether this is good or bad. I will also discuss how to effectively communicate to a workforce that isn’t created equally, and how to treat a workforce effectively when everyone has a different deal. I will also discuss the effect this trend toward greater pay inequality will have in employee’s satisfaction with their pay, their job, and life in general. What role does money play in a person’s life, For example in work and in their life in general? Should organizations be worried about these issues? Elaborate. Money produces satisfaction in the workforce because it motivates many employees to do their job in order to progress in the field they are in. Although Research does suggest that even if we let people decide how much they should earn, they would probably be less satisfied with their jobs even more. Studies show that even pay alone is sufficient or motivational. Studies show that employees who are intrinsically motivated are three times more likely to engage in their work then those are only extrinsically motivated such as money. The more that people focus on their salaries, the less they will focus on satisfying their intellectual curiosity, learning new skills, or having fun. It is known that emotional wellbeing levels increases each time salary levels raise. I believe that organizations should worry about these issues because the biggest organizational cause of disengagement is incompetent leadership (Premuzic, 2013). Thus as a manager, it’s your personality that keeps employees engaged at work.It’s important that if companies want to motivate their workforce, they need to understand what their employees really value. The role of money satisfies people in their lives in general by solving many of their problems, this includes not facing basic problems when it comes to food, shelter, water and clothing. With a sufficient amount of money, you can also live a healthier lifestyle because money meets all of your important needs. Extreme executive pay and managing the risks that businesses take especially in banks continue to be on headlines after the financial crisis. This argument revolved around short term incentives being bad because it causes poor behavior, while long term incentives discourage people from making reckless decisions. Based on the survey of European CFOs, it showed that man employers are now offering long term incentives as plans. Since 2010 CFO base salaries make up 40% of compensation packages, this was due to the increase of long term incentives. According to Dr. Alexander Pepper he believes that long term incentives may be making a bad situation worse, he came to the conclusion that executives are discounting the cause of long term incentives by 30%. This meant that incentives would be worth less than 50% of face value if realized over three years. Pepper doesn’t believe that all incentives are bad but he argues that they should be low powered (much smaller) to encourage right behavior, rather than the “highpowered” which encourages people to engage in risky behaviors due to the balance shifting in favor of salaries. My belief is that if people got paid in a balanced way, they would feel much happier and this will positively improve the markets. How do you communicate effectively in a workforce environment that isn’t created equally? When everyone has a different deal how are people treated in the workforce? Based on the cases what will greater pay inequality have on an employee’s satisfaction with their pay, their job, and life in general? Elaborate. In the workforce many people aren’t treated equally therefore it’s important to set expectations by inviting those needed for participation if you need them. For example; HR leaders, executives and even finance analysts are more present when it comes to workforce planning on strategic roles. It is key to set responsibilities and deadlines that are realistic. Another key factor in effective workforce planning is having clear communication throughout the organization. When teams are being brought together it’s important that you clarify how you will reach your goals, as well as finding individuals who are dedicated to helping you reach these goals. Questions that can be asked to determine the workforce strategy is who can communicate the needs of the organization effectively? And who can help stakeholders to agree on plans of actions? (Aquire, n.d). Working in an office environment means that you have to deal with different personalities which can be challenging especially when people are hard to deal with, this leads to slower productivity and deadlines that can be missed, therefore different people need to be dealt with in different ways. Ways to deal with different personality types is finding out how other people like to work and adapt accordingly, for example if someone likes to be emailed than take note, it’s also important to realize that everything is not a battle, for example when your engaging in workplace conflict it causes work to get delayed and people become stressed it’s important to decide what your priorities are, it’s also important to realize that everyone is in it together, different personalities in a work environment can allow people to form many different ideas and opinions. It’s also very important to treat everyone with respect because most people want to know that they are being heard. There are many changes within health employment benefits these include wellness programs, a lot of employers are finding that wellness programs are helping to encourage people to be physically, emotionally and mentally healthy. This impacts healthcare costs creating a sense of community within their organizations. A growing number of employers can now provide resources to help employees manage and invest their money. Other changes within the health employment benefits include high deductible health plans, more transparency around retirement account fees, and greater automation and integration of benefits (Taylor, 2015). I have personally noticed these changes in my healthcare plan, since I am under Medicaid I have seen many programs being offered to me to improve my overall health.
