Question 1
Exxon Valdez accident took place in March 1989 when a tanker hit Bligh Reef, causing it to
spill over 144,000 m3 of crude oil in the water. There were several causes that were connected to
this accident which was considered the biggest of all for years until 2010 when Deepwater
Horizon oil spill happened. The Exxon shipping company was accused of not inspecting the ship
before it started the transportation of the oil. Another cause is that the third mate could not
maneuver the vessel due to fatigue. Another possible cause was blamed on the Exxon Company
failing to properly inspect the functionality of the Raytheon Collision Avoidance System
(RAYCAS) radar that could possibly detect the reef earlier enough before the vessel hitting it.
The rescue team could not access the place easily because of its inaccessibility.
The oil spillage could be addressed using three main methods that include; containing the
spill using the booms then the oil on the surface of water can be collected using skimmers.
Another method involves the use of dispersants that break down the oil hence speeding up the
rate at which it is biodegrading. The oil can then mix with water and get absorbed in the aquatic
environment. The third method that could be used to address this disaster is the addition of
biological ag...
