Introduction

The United States performs poorly on most health indicators when compared to other
countries (Perk, et al., 2012). Chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes and heart disease are
becoming a bigger concern to the nation’s health. Some of the underlying cause such as the use of
Tobacco continue to affect a vast number of people and accounts for nearly 75 percent of the total
expenditure (Perk, et al., 2012). Prevention is the process of combating a disease and its causal
factors even before it strikes.
Value of Prevention
One of the benefits of prevention is the fact that it is cost saving. Prevention provides
essential medical benefits at a reasonable cost. According to Perk, et al. (2012), a preventive
service can be cost-effective or cost saving. Cost effectiveness is in such a way that huge health
benefits are derived from relatively small price (Beaglehole, et al., 2011). Cost saving highlights
the fact that every dollar spent reduces a greater cost. An example of a health prevention program
is the Pitney Bowes Health Care University Program which resulted in 5 percent cost reduction
for participants over three years (Perk, et al., 2012).
