A majority of your paper should be a description of what you heard and a comparison of the similarities and differences between the movements of the symphony you choose to analyze.

Use these five categories to compare the four movements of the symphony (one movement at a time):

  1. Tonality – Major or minor tonality?
  2. Tempo – fast, slow, moderate, gradually changing (Note: each movement is named a tempo marking)
  3. Meter – duple, triple, or quadruple

Analysis of Haydn’s Symphony 94
Background
The symphony 94 (Surprise Symphony) is primarily categorized by name of Symphony
No. 94 in the G Major of the orchestral work. The symphony was named “surprise” due to its
startlingly loud chord which often interrupts the gentle and soft flow of the second movements.
Joseph Haydn composed the symphony number 94, commonly referred to as London's surprise
during the late 18th century. The symphony debuted during a performance in London in the year
1791 (Doan, n.p). This is just one of Haydn's popular symphonies as he composed so many in his
time that it is still used to date. His prowess's reputation in music made other artists recognize
his work as exemplary, where his techniques and symphonies are used as standards for the
development of the current ones. Hence, Haydn has played a critical role in the music industry,
where most new inventions point back to his career. The name surprise referring to symphony 94
was used to define the symphony's unique quality to capture the audience's feelings
unexpectedly. The symphony is composed of four distinct movements that characterize it in the
symphony.
The First Movement
The introductory part of the symphony starts with slow alterations of the woodwind and
strings. The slow movement of the symphony attempts to introduce the audience to a significant
part of the music. Instruments utilized during this stage include the crotchet, flutes, and strings.
