This paper combines many things you have learned throughout this course. Your goal is to describe an ideal but realistic sustainable neighborhood or city that you would like to see in the future. This paper is a chance to voice your personal opinion about what a truly sustainable city should look like; however, your opinion must be supported by reputable evidence and should include concepts discussed in class. Note: No development worksheet is provided for this paper. If you found the Micro Essay worksheets helpful, please follow the same process for analyzing the goals of each section of the paper, or create your own table to organize your findings. Instructions Write a paper of 1750 to 2000 words in which you describe your ideal sustainable city. You can pick any region and/or climate type you want. Follow the structure and details listed below, and use headers to identify each of the 4 sections. Section 1: Introduction In one paragraph, explain your overall philosophy or vision for your city. Make sure to specify the geographic region/climate conditions for your ideal community – a place you would especially like to live in, and that is sustainable (in whatever way you want to define the term). Each paragraph should be approximately 150 words. Section 3: Urban Fabric Write as many well-organized paragraphs as appropriate to describe some of the features or answer some of the questions below. • • • • How is this place laid out in terms of streets, buildings, public spaces, parks, homes, workplaces, and shopping areas? What planning strategies influenced your vision of a sustainable urban fabric (Buildings, Transportation, Green Infrastructure). How do the chosen strategies support your vision? How does your city reduce social and environmental equity issues? How does your vision work towards the chosen SDGs and to overall sustainability of your city/neighborhood? This section should be approximately 750 words. Section 4: Conclusion Write one paragraph in which you explain how your envisioned city/neighborhood can be achieved in the near future. Is this actually realistic? If so, what would be required to achieve it? If not, why not? Your conclusion should be approximately 150 words. Sustainable Cities

I consider Oakland city as my ideal town. The city is situated at the geographical
center of the San Francisco Bay, Alameda County and covers about 56 square miles of land,
19 miles of coastline and magnificent rolling hills in the state of California. Oakland city is
enshrined in historic yet sustainable environments that incorporate vibrancy and an appealing
urban form. Being an environmentally conscious person, I envision an urban estate whose
planning is devoid of freeways crisscrossing the communities with rare automobiles for
transportation. On the other hand, the town should provide ample spaces to support the
convenience of chain retail stores and eateries with a lot of consideration to ensure that it is
not saturated. Nonetheless, the ideal but sustainable city should reveal the ability to foster the
supply of natural resources while at the same time promoting the social, economic, and
physical wellbeing of its residents and remain secure from the environmental threats that may
dwindle its advancement. Similarly, I would wish to live in a city that depicts the optimal
ability to meet its social, political, cultural, and physical aspirations while subjecting all its
residents to essential services without depleting its resources.
Sustainable Development Goals
Good health and wellbeing
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3 aims at ensuring healthy lives and promoting
the wellbeing of all residents of all ages. Ideally, the health conditions of the residents of a
city affect how they will contribute to the social, economic, cultural, and political aspects of
the town. Such a premise reveals residents of all ages need to be accorded with adequate
health coverages and the ability to access safe and effective medical supplies, vaccines, and
healthcare services. Nunes, Lee, and O’Riordan (2016) consider reduced child and maternal
mortality rates and a population that presents with minimal effects of ailments as essential
indicators of good health and wellbeing. The scholars explain that city planners could make

use of information communication technologies at their disposal to initiate treatments and
foster good health and wellbeing through early diagnosis and disease management. As such, I
would envision living in a city with adopted effective measures to minimize the adverse
effects of ailments such as HIV/Aids, tuberculosis, and influenza.
Affordable clean energy
SDG (7) makes it a requirement for economies across the globe to ensure that their
populaces have access to modern energy sources that reveal the attributes of reliability,
affordability, and sustainability. In particular, Klopp and Petretta (2017) consider access to
