History involves recreation of the past through the collection of information and the
examination of the relevance of such information from the artifacts and records existing from a
given historical period. Reconstruction of history entails the collection and the analysis of
information and data related to a certain period and connecting it to the cultures and the practices
associated with people and the period. Newspapers are some of the artifacts and sources that
historians use to reconstruct history, and although they may lack objectivity, at times they offer
insights into the specific dates and times they were published. In this paper I will be using the
New York Times in two weeks of 50 years apart to analyze the life in the U.S in November 1936
to November 1986.
In November 1936, the U.S economy had not yet recovered from the great depression and
the Americans had just re-elected president D. Roosevelt. The new deal economic policy was
being negotiated, and the president was pushing it through the congress 1 . Most Americans were
supportive of the implementation of the unemployment benefits and the social security aspects of
the new deal, although it had to be implemented 1 . The new deal coalition had solidified the hold
of the Democrats over the United States government 1 . Just like in November 1936, in November
