In the past years, the wealthiest people in the U.S (1%) have witnessed a significant growth of
more than 300%, while the poorest (50%) seen no gain at the same time. The stagnant wages
have resulted in pressure on working families as there has been a continuous increase in the cost
of child care, health care, education, and housing. Also, the rapidly changing economy has an
increased likelihood of threatening to leave most people behind. The focus of the House Budget
Committee in its September 19th meeting was to collect relevant information on the impact of
economic inequalities on hindering the economic mobility of working families, undermining the
country's fiscal outlook, and slowing economic growth. The Committee's discussion was on
policy solutions that can help strengthen the economy and ensure the working families shares in
the nation's economic shares. With the increased consensus on the need to build an economy that
functions for each person than just the wealthy growing, there are few fundamental policies that
Congress should enact to address income inequality in both the short-term and long-term.
Raising the Minimum Wage per Hour
An effective and direct way to deal with inequality is by raising the federal minimum wage.
Despite the stagnation of the average workers' wages, those in the top management have
experienced skyrocketing pay. Although various states and municipalities have implemented the
$7.25 per hour minimum wage, it does not reflect the economy's growth. Currently, the CEO
earns more than 273 times compared to average workers, which is ten times larger difference,

currently compared to 50 years back. Over the past years, there has been tremendous growth in
the U.S economy because of an increase in worker productivity. It implies that if the minimum
