The monster lived next to the hall in the water, so for the monster he felt that that was his home and the soldiers were disrupting his living. He took actions into his own hand to go up to the hall and kill the soldiers who caused him the disruption, thus getting justice for it. When you go to the aspect of the King and the soldiers, they lost 30 of their fellow soldiers and friends and were destined to get justice for them by killing the monster. That is why they asked for Beowulf to come and take care of the monster and later the dragon because of the death they caused. Now the monster's mother also has her idea of justice because she lost her son at the hands of Beowulf and wanted to get justice for him. On either side you look at it you can see and understand why each side did what they did, since they felt they have been wronged and needed to get justice to make it right. For the humans, Beowulf is the hero because he killed the monster than killed the 30 soldiers in the hall and brought peace back to the town. However if you look at the monsters perspective, Beowulf killed Grendel and were in fear they may be next, leading to them trying to kill Beowulf. ... Student 2- Before Beowulf leaves Danes, King Hrothgar tries to give Beowulf advice for him to remember. King Hrothgar tries to tell him that he should "beware of arrogance" and not give in to pride as this could be a cause of downfall for him. The King also tries to tell him that he will inevitably be subdued by death. This is significant when it comes to the discussions on whether or not Beowulf is a hero. Beowulf was a hero when it came to saving Danes' people from Grendel's wrath; however, there are similarities between the two. Just as we can call Grendel a monster for killing people, as a warrior, Beowulf has killed too. When Grendel's mother tries to get revenge on Beowulf as he killed her son, he kills Grendel's mother even though she was only trying to avenge her son. After this, he cuts off Grendel's head even though he is already dead. Even if his justification was to protect Danes' people, he did not have to do this. Although it is hard to say what precisely the definition of justice Beowulf is defending, it seems as though the reason Beowulf is motivated is due to the praise that he gets, his triumphs, and the gifts that he has received. Grendel kills people because of the envy and jealousy he feels, Grendel's mother tries to kill as vengeance for her son, and Beowulf kills for recognition and fame. This gives insight as to why Beowulf could be considered a villain. The dragon is angry and furious as he notices that someone has stolen his treasure, so the dragon decides to kill for his monetary greed. Beowulf decides that he must go against the dragon. When he considers fighting against the dragon, he initially chooses to fight the dragon on his own. However, he goes against the dragon with at least 11 companions and is guided by another person. At this time, Beowulf is the King of his people; however, he does not think about what his people will do if he is killed in battle. Furthermore, he does not think about the companions he takes with him to this battle and what will happen if they are killed by the dragon. This is significant because it shows that Beowulf is also killing for his greed. As when he was younger, he wanted to be considered a great warrior and defeat this mighty dragon, but he let his arrogance get the better of him, just as King Hrothgar warns him against. All of these characters are killing for their satisfaction, including the "hero" of the story, Beowulf. ...
