Module 7: Natalie the Retail Manager and Claudia the Star Performer
Natalie the Retail Manager
1.
Establishment or achievement phase of her career and factors taken into account
From the analysis of the case study, it is evident that her career is at the achievement
phase. This is because Natalie has already passed the establishment phase where she had already
being accepted into the organization. The achievement phase is marked by increased recognition
of one’s competencies and limitations. At the achievement phase of one’s career, one shows
greater understanding of the job market and decisions to undertake to advance the careers. After
five years of working at Enigma, she had gained experience and knowledge and was rising
through the ranks which is one factor which identifies the achievement phase from the
established phase. She has already gained acceptance from the organization and sought to gain
greater responsibilities in the workplace.
2.
Issues Natalie needs to take into account. Influence of nonwork life
Some of the issues that Natalie has to take into account include her fiancé’s reaction to
the promotion and the movement to the west coast, how to raise a family without any help from
parents and relatives, her own career ambitions, challenges of the new work role such as
increased stress, the challenges presented by refusing the promotion and the rewards that he
deserved for working for the organization. Natalie’s nonwork life plays a critical role in
influencing her decision as she is tied to her current location by her familial ties and that of her
husband to be. If she were alone Natalie would easily have accepted the promotion. As an
upwardly mobile manager in her early career it is important for Natalie to consider her nonwork
issues as they influence her personal and professional life as well. Her nonwork life holds her
down to her current locations and stops her from pursuing the promotion.

Career and life choices if I were Natalie
To satisfy her work and life balance as Natalie I would convince my finance to accept the
move to the West Coast but on a temporary basis. In that, the promotion comes with an increased
salary which would act as capital to pursue the entrepreneurial career of opening a high-end
houseware store. Holding off on having children and working for another three to five years after
gaining the promotion would help to collect enough money to start the entrepreneurial career and
as such move back home to start a family and business satisfying the critical work-life balance
by taking up the promotion and following my professional dreams.
4.
Predication of Natalie’s future
Natalie’s decision to refuse the promotion would result in increased job stress and lack of
job satisfaction which will result in an unhappy future. Taking up the promotion at Seattle would
allow her to advance her career and have her family when she is ready. Even at Seattle, she can
get child support necessary to raise her family. This is the best path for her and would lead to a
happy future.
Claudia the Star Performer
1.
Perceptions of Claudia’s action in seeking additional responsibilities
The strive for personal and professional development is what characterizes human nature,
and in this case, Claudia was justified in seeking additional responsibilities from a different
employee. It is natural for her as an ambitious and talented employee to seek greener pastures.
Given her track record and MBA, I believe the Bank would have matched the benefits being
offered by the other employer to retain such a valuable employee.

Analysis of Claudia’s actions
Claudia did not act ethically by accepting the job from the investment bank as she
notified her current employer to match the benefits being offered. If she had left without giving
the current employer an opportunity to match the offer, it would have been considered an
unethical conduct. Alternatives she would have considered in her quest for upward advancement
