Classical Approaches to Management
The Classical approach is a management theory, which mainly focuses on productivity,
workers efficiency and output rather than behavioral differences existing in the midst. This
theory received proposal during industrial revolution time. The works involved were from Henri
Fayol, Frederick Taylor, and Max Weber. Classical management approach posed various
challenges, which led to the proposal of the neoclassical organization theory. This paper helps to
bring out the five classical approaches to management.

Frederick Taylor produced the first classical approach in this paper referred to as
scientific management approach. The approach was based on maximizing profits and worker
capacity. The problem, which resulted, was because employees were worked to their maximum
ability. It was accompanied by various elements aimed at increasing output and pay. Every task

was entitled to training to ensure each worker understands the various motion studies expected at
the end of the task. The approach has an equal work distribution between managers and workers.
Managers are portrayed as intelligent while workers are ignorant. Workers have an allowance to
earn higher wages only through hard work and that training; evaluation and planning are the
manager’s responsibility.
Fayol’s administrative theory formulated an approach aimed to improve administration
functions to ensure that works are not only motivated by money but also equity in workplace
treatment. The management procedure, which Fayol argued, was to have managerial objectives
including planning, organizing, command, coordination and control. This monitoring system
ensured that problems arising are closely monitored and rectified within the shortest time
possible to ensure no loss. The theory suggests that work division, giving orders, good conduct,
the unity of command, centralization, equity, the order among other good virtues in the
workplace will help establish a well-managed system. This approach is characterized by a wellorganized communication system to pass information from management to workers.
Weber’s theory of bureaucracy also referred as the social and economic organization
theory describes the general policies, which should be followed in an organization. This
organizational structure theory argues that managers should have the privilege of giving
directives as dictated by the organizational rules and regulations. Bureaucracy in this situation
allows an optimal form of authority existence. The types of legitimate authorities expressed in
this theory include traditional, charismatic and rational authority. The various components of
bureaucracy include rules, hierarchy, specific training, every rule is put down on paper and no
ownership of technology to workers. Thus, the bureaucratic theory only operates solemnly on
written rules.

Gilbreth theory also provides a classical approach to the management of an organization.
Gilbreth argues that there is usually one best way to do any task and business management can
always be improved by finding this way. The management theory is summed by various
assumptions. First, reduction of motion numbers in a task increases efficiency. Secondly, the
only way to understand a task better is to have incremental study and take more time to that
part...
