Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Maslow’s Theory: Abraham Maslow wanted to understand what motivates people. Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfill the next one, and so on. He created a visual representation of human needs that was five levels of needs within a pyramid. There were FIVE levels to his pyramid and successful completion of each level allowed you to travel up one level. Ultimately, the end goal was to reach or fulfill your potential. Unfortunately, progress is often disrupted by failure to meet lower level needs. Life experiences including financial problems, illness, divorce, etc. can cause an individual to fluctuate between levels of the hierarchy. Maslow noted only one in a hundred people become fully self-actualized because our society rewards motivation primarily based on esteem, love and other social needs. Maslow’s Pyramid: Directions: Using Maslow’s pyramid as a guide, you will create a customized version of your specific needs that will not only tell me about your personality, but also your future goals and plans. The following criteria will help you fill in the blank template. Level 1: (Physiological Needs) You need to list your 3 favorite foods, an article of clothing you can’t live without, your favorite restaurant, where you live (town). Level 2: (Safety and Belonging) You need to list where you work (if you have a job), 3 of your prized possessions, and your family members names and relationships. (EX: brother, John, 15 years old) Level 3: (Love and Belonging) You need to list your best friend(s) names, name of significant other (if you have one☺), 4 activities you like to do with your family or friends and 2 hobbies/interests. Level 4: (Self-Esteem) You need to list 3 personality characteristics and 3 accomplishments you are most proud of. Level 5: (Self-Actualization) You need to explain YOUR ULTIMATE DREAMS AND GOALS IN LIFE! These could be career goals, athletic goals, academic goals, entertainment goals, etc.
