Personal identity in a career is quite important since it gives you opportunities and
ensures you are on the path to your career goals and objectives. Upon graduating, one is often
confused since you have two identities depending on your experience and personality. More
efficient and great results need to combine experience, academic qualifications, and personality
to have a powerful personal identity in the job market. However, this often is not the case for
many graduates since they have no identity, making it hard for them to navigate the job market,
hence the need to develop components that create a professional identity.
One component of professional identity is reflection. Studies show that reflection
contributes to confidence, building skills, creativity, maturity, knowledge, and professionalism.
Reflection makes individuals intentionally grow new concepts from past experiences and new
knowledge. It also allows them to challenge current assumptions and encourage new perceptions
through self-appraisal. Reflection ensures the consolidation of theory and practice enhancing
professional behaviour (O'Reilly & Milner, 2015). Reflection allows the building of professional
identity through resonating values and beliefs of an individual. There are three types of
reflection; reflection in action, reflection on action, and reflection. In-action occurs when in the
process of action, and the immediate feedback is acted on to adjust or continue. Reflecting on the
action is when it is done when an event is recalled or analysed by virtual of these processes,
professional development is easily achieved.
Mentoring is another way of professional development since mentors act as teachers, role
models and help individuals attain professional and personal growth by providing them with
