which was indicated as “E”. When highest priority groups are on the opposite side of
the adjacent carbon atoms is responsible for the trans geometry.

1-butene is less substituted alkene compared to 2-butene. Therefore, more
substituted product is formed with higher percentage.

(2) 2-bromo-2,3-dimethylbutane
2,3-dimethyl-1-butene is less substituted alkene compared to the 2,3-dimethyl-2butene. Therefore, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene is formed higher percentage.

(d) Substitution and elimination reactions are often in competition. Briefly explain any
effects you might need to consider for a competition with the corresponding substitution
in these reactions, such as stereochemistry
In 2-bromo-2,3-dimethylbutane, reaction is used strong base and the reactant (2bromo-2,3-dimethylbutane) is tertiary alkyl halide. When tertiary alkyl halides are
used with strong base, they often show competition between elimination and
substitution reaction. Therefore, to obtain elimination product from the tertiary alkyl
halide we need to use bulky base such as LDA, tOBu, etc.
