Performance appraisals are quantifiable metrics used by employers to evaluate the good and bad performers and productivity. It gives employers feedbacks about employees performance.

The four major performance appraisals are:

  • Behavioral checklists  which are  absolute results used by evaluators to focus on behaviors of employees.. It takes time to construct and consumes money.
  • Ranking is a straight ranking method used by managers who conduct an overall assessment of employees from best to worst. However, this method is subject to errors and inconsistent appraisals.
  • Essay methods is used for filling information gaps but highly dependent on writing skills.
  • Management by objective (MBO) is used by management for managerial position. This method can't be applied to all jobs.
If an employee's work is not quantifiable,a manager can appraise an employee on a one -on-one basis using effective communication techniques and interpersonal interaction.
