6y-4=26 find the value of 3y

Oct 24th, 2014

you have to solve the equation for y first:

1) put the variable in one side and the numbers added or subtracted in the other side, where they cross the equal sign (go to the other side of the equation) with the opposite of the operation. (if it is added then subtracted from the other side)

6y - 4 = 26               so move 4 and add it (opposite to -4) in the other side

6y = 26+4  ,    so 6y = 30

2) you can continue as usual equations, and since 6 is multiplied by y, it goes the other side divided

y = 30/6,   then multiply y by 3 to evaluate 3y

y=5, so 3y = 3*5 = 15

OR: in this problem it is easier to divide the whole equation by 2:

6y = 30      /2    --------->       3y = 15
