Importance of class representation in higher education
Class struggle exists in every society which is highly inclined on the concept of wealth
and class as people are treated based on their social-economic status. Social-economic status is
the class or social standing of a group of people or an individual. Its measurement is based on a
combination of income, education and occupation. Social class has significant effects in the U.S
as it determines the family life, health, religious affiliation as well as education of the people. By
examining the social-economic status, one can reveal the inequalities that exist when it comes to
accessing resources as well as issues related to privilege, power and control. One of the sectors
that are significantly affected as a result of class struggle is high education. Individuals from
higher social-economic backgrounds are more likely to acquire higher education as compared to
those from a lower social-economic class.
Majority of the working individuals belong to the middle and lower social classes.
