SEX, ROMANCE, AND RELATIONSHIPS IN THE ERA OF COVID Definition of coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19: In COVID-19, “CO” stands for corona, “VI” stands virus, and “D” stands for disease, hence, COVID-19. It is given the number “19” since it was first identified in the year 2019. OVERVIEW: What effect do you think COVID-19 (COVID) has had on our sexual, romantic, and social relationships. This omnipresent disease has been with us for the past 8 (maybe even 9 or 10) months and has totally changed our lives, not just in the areas that this paper will address, but in most all areas of human interaction. This paper is an effort to chronicle or document some of the impact this disease has had upon our sexual, romantic, and social relationships. First, think of yourself. How has it affected you? No, you don’t have to tell your personal business sex-wise or otherwise. But, think about it, because you are probably reflective of many others. Then, think about family, friends, fellow students, and others, who, your might not consider a friend, but you know them. Began to compile information from all of these sources and jot down some general observations. You might consider 5 people that you know. Make up 5 or so questions as to how, or whether, COVID has changed their sexual, romantic, or social relationships over the past 8 months. Get them to tell you how by asking questions like. “tell me about that,” or, “could you explain that a bit more.” Like a survey! After you have asked these questions of how ever many people you ask, then your paper will be a compilation of their responses. Some have made references to “when we get back to normal,” however others say that we will never “get back to normal.” Some say that there will be a “new” normal, after COVID has significantly subsided. I wonder what that (a new normal) looks like. Are we moving into an era of high-tech and low touch? These are some thoughts you might consider covering in your paper: • • • • Will there be a baby explosion in 2021 or will most relationships be over and done? Are people more sexually active because they are confined more so than normal or will people be more abstinent since they’re not trying to get to close (social distancing) to one another? Are people dating? If so, how? If they’re not dating, what takes its place? Are sales of sex toys at an all time high? ASSIGNMENT: Your assignment is to write a 500 (approximately 2-3 pages) word paper on the topic: “SEX, ROMANCE, AND RELATIONSHIPS IN THE ERA OF COVID.” The paper should be double-spaced. This paper will be the equivalent of a test, that is, it will constitute 25% of your final grade. I will use your grade from this Assignment, the scores of your first 2 tests and the final exam to determine your grade. You will be graded on Originality, Grammar, and Content. This paper will be due by 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 9, 2020. I might ask some of you to read your papers in class. Originality: I want to know what you think, not someone else. I do not mean that you can’t talk to family, friends, classmates, and persons in your social network. And it’s ok to say that you talked to a family or friend and they said . . . But what I don’t want is for you to google material, copy and use it. Grammar: You are college students! Your work should reflect it. You should use all of the word processing tools (edit, spell check, thesaurus, etc.) available to you. I’m not looking for a Pulitzer Prize winner (but who knows), but good, basic, English grammar. Content: What are you saying? Does it make sense? Are you using factual information (are you using some of the facts that we know about the coronavirus in your paper)? If you choose to talk about yourself, that is ok, but you don’t have to. Thoughts to Consider: Try to have fun with the Assignment! You’ve hopefully thought some about this assignment since I mentioned it in class. So, now is the time to start writing. Read it to a trusted friend or classmate after you have finished for feedback. Let this paper be a true reflection of how you perceive the coronavirus to have affected yours and others lives in regards to their Sexual, Romantic, and Social Relationships in the Era of COVID-19.
