Description
- Choose a topic from the list provided to you by your course faculty. Apply the concepts of population health and epidemiology to the topic.
- Synthesize Course content from Weeks 1-5 according to the following sections:
- Introduction: Analysis of the communicable disease (causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment) to include demographic break down that includes age, gender, race, or other at-risk indicators (da ta per demographics should include mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence).
- Determinants of Health: Define, identify and synthesize the determinants of health as related to the development of the infection. Utilize HP2020.
- Epidemiological Triad: Identify and describe all elements of the epidemiological triad: Host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. Utilize the demographic break down to fur ther describe the triad.
- Role of the NP: Succinctly define the role of the nurse practitioner according to a national nurse practitioner organization ( National Board of Nursing or AANP, for example) and synthesize the role to the management of infectious diseases (surveillance, primary/secondary/tertiary interventions, reporting, data collecting, data analysis, and follow-up). This includes the integration of a model of practice which supports the implementation of an evidence-based practice. Refer to your course textbook for models of practice examples.

Week 5: Infectious Disease Paper: Transgender Individuals with HIV/AIDs
HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) refers to the form of the disease while AIDS
(Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) refers to the chronic progressed form of the disease.
The main mode of communication of HIV is unprotected intercourse with infected persons, but
may also be transmitted through contact with infected blood and needle sticks. During the early
phases of the infections, persons manifests with lymphadenopathy, sore throats, diarrhea, rash,
weight loss, joint and muscle pain, cough, headache, night sweats, and fever. The symptomatic
phase presents with pneumonia, shingles, oral thrush, fatigue, and fever. Clinical AIDS presents
with skin bumps or rash, lymphadenopathy, persistent fatigue, cachexia, long-term diarrhea, and
recurring fever. The risk factors of the disease include utilization of intravenous drugs involving
sharing of needles, having a sexually communicated infection, and unprotected coitus.
Complication of the disease may include cytomegalovirus, Kaposi’s sarcoma, neurological
complications, tuberculosis, wasting syndrome, cryptococcal meningitis, candidiasis,
toxoplasmosis, appendicitis (Schleimann et al., 2018), and pneumocystis pneumonia. There is no
cure and management of the disease involves utilization of antiviral drugs to limit viral
replication and hence progression of the disease.
Epidemiology
The disorder has a global distribution and affects persons of all gender, age, and class.
Among the transgender population, the epidemic is highest among transfeminine women, with
the rate of occurrence going up to 40 percent (Poteat, Scheim, Xavier, Reisner, & Baral, 2016).
According to Chhim et al. (2017), the worldwide prevalence of the disorder among transgender
females is about 19 percent, with high-income nations having a higher rate of occurrence (22
percent) compared to middle-and low-income nations (18 percent).
