Description
For this week's discussion, I have chosen child victims. In my home state of Florida, the amount of child abuse reported in the state of Florida is astronomical. So far, in 2016, there have been 335 child deaths in the state (dcf.state.fl.us). Not all of these deaths were directly caused by abuse. Some were caused by neglect, drowning or co-sleeping incidents. There are several services available for children and families in this State. Depending on the type of abuse depends on the type of service. For those children who are actually removed from their families, a case manager is assigned to assist with service referrals. Whether it is counseling, play therapy or mental health services, children have access to several programs (dcf. state.fl.us). Children who are not removed from their parents but are in need of services still have access to them. What the state does lack is adequate mental health services for teens and young children. Many victims of abuse need adequate mental health services. Even those who do not suffer from any abuse may be diagnosed with mental health services and the state of Florida does not really provide those to the full extent. Usually this is due to lack of funding. According to Davis, Lurigio and Herman (2013), children who are victims of sexual abuse often act out and show signs of aggression. The abuse they ensured may contribute to their mental health and their healing process. Georgia, New Jersey and Illinois are among other states who have adequate mental health services in which they have seen a positive outcome in youth who participate in their services (mentalhealthamerica.net). Should the state of Florida increase their availability for mental health services for youth, the number of abuse allegations or reports may decrease significantly.
