Report on a New City in Malaysia
Introduction
Kuantan was a part of the Chi-Tu Empire in the 11th century. This part was conquered by
another empire called Pheng-Keng before being taken over by Siamese in the 12th century.
Kuantan is a small but very active city that is believed to have been established by migrants from
Sumatra. It was in the 1850s that Kuantan put itself on the map. Kuantan is a new city in
Malaysia that serves as an administrative center and a capital of the state of Pahang, the largest
state of the Malaysian Peninsula. Over 400,000 people live in Kuantan, making it the largest city
on the east coast of Malaysia (Fatah, Othman & Abdullah, 2012). Due to the increased
population, the city is rapidly growing with a lot of ongoing development projects. Major
economic activity in Kuantan is tourism, trade, and commerce activities. The city has the best
destinations, such as punching caves, waterfalls, recreation parks, and many others. Kuantan is a
tourist attraction and a trading center; there was a need to establish hotels and accommodation
facilities that provided basic needs for the traders and tourists. The Hyatt Regency Kuantan
resort was the first five-star luxury hotel to be established on the Telok Chempedak beach. This
research aims to analyze various aspects of Kuantan city. It analyzes the events or circumstances
that surrounded its foundation and some of the major economic activities of its residents. Further,
it focuses on evaluating the socio-economic factors of the city and their relevance to the
development of the city. Finally, the report focuses on evaluating the urban policies and theories
applied in this city.

Research can be used to realize new rising opportunities in the area; Kuantan is a fastgrowing city. It has many developments and economic activities underway. It has a lot of
opportunities for job seekers and citizens. Research helps investors in the creation of innovative
ideas for businesses and shows the fields in which the business can perform well. The research
about Kuantan city can also be used by investors when making a business decision and plans.
Research can also be used to understand various issues and create public awareness; for example,
urban flooding in Kuantan has been a great challenge. Researchers and disaster management
agencies are working to improve methods of flood prevention and creation of awareness to the
mass on the safety measures. Research can be used as a tool for building knowledge and
facilitating learning.
Entrance to the newly selected city
Although this city is perceived as outstanding following its different unique features, it is
perceived as the magnification of the larger culture and ways of life not only in the region but
also in the entire nation. The city provides a platform on which individuals within the region can
meet and carry out their business activities and interact on a broad spectrum of topics. The city's
geographical positioning makes it important to the neighboring regions because it serves as the
center for various services. Besides, Kuantan works closely with the entire country to ensure that
various economic and social activities are expected. It has brought some of the important
services at its core, thus preventing people from traveling to other parts of the country to access
the same services (Pinna, Masala & Garau, 2017). Since this city is located on a broad alluvial
plain north of the productive Pahang River delta, Malaysia's most critical port is on the east
coast. It facilitates the shipping of copra south, rubber, and tin to Singapore for exportation.

Thus, many economic activities occur in this city, which is very important for the growth of the
region and the country at large.
Although various sources provide different information related to the actual size of
Kuantan, its actual size is approximately 32,400 ha. This is the exact area occupied by the city,
and it is also the one recognized by the government maps. Acquiring insights from the UN
population growth forecasts and statistics, it is apparent that the city’s population growth rate is
increasing exponentially with an average of 2-3% annually. Since 2016, the population growth
rate has averaged around 2.5%. The target population size in 2020 is 503,000. From these trends,
the population growth in this city in the coming years is expected to be high (Fatah, Othman &
Abdullah, 2012). General density alludes to the number of individuals living in a specific urban
area per square of land in kilometers. This is an important aspect of the city because it
determines how it generally carries out most of its daily activities. The approximated general
density in Kuantan is 1,600/km2 (4,100/sq mi). There are limited details issued to promote net
growth density.
Social activities are the behavioral patterns, attitudes, feelings, and understanding
towards others. In contrast, economic activities are things done to earn a living. They may
include manufacturing, distributing, or utilizing products or services. Social-economic is a
science that focuses on the relationship between behavior and economics. The availability of
several natural resources such as natural gas and refined crude oil has triggered Kuantan's rapid
growth into a modernized city for the past few years. This growth has been initiated by the
government plan to make Kuantan a special economic zone. Under this plan, approaches such as
education, job opportunities, and industrialization are introduced (Fatah, Othman & Abdullah,
2012). Infrastructure improvement in Kuantan city has eased the movement of raw material

materials and outputs to and from the industries. Although there was rapid development, there
were several drawbacks such as air and water pollution contamination, resulting in a low quality
of life. This city comprises individuals from various cultural groups. It includes individuals
across various cultural groups in Asia. Furthermore, the city has individuals with various
education levels, and this presents the disparity in both the social and economic standings. The
population comprises of various social groups and classes, which are motivated by the disparity
in income and various beliefs. Among the main religion in the city Islamic, but the citizens are
not restricted from practicing other types of religions, including Christianity. The natives in this
city have strong religious and cultural beliefs which are based on the Islamic religion. Social
stratification is another concept that has been magnified in this city (Pinna, Masala & Garau,
2017). There are both wealthy and poor persons, which is mostly motivated by the availability of
differences in pay among various job groups. There is intermarriage. Initially, the city comprised
of the Malays as the mainstream culture. Nevertheless, this is no longer the case because of the
intermarriages between the immigrants from Europe, Arab, Persia, and the local communities.
The main economic activity in Kuantan city is tourism. The city has major tourist
destinations. The Sungai waterfall, a scenic cascade with a swimming pool, is a major tourist
attraction site. Others such as Teluk Campedak has a casual swimming pool near the eateries.
These attractions have largely contributed to the rise of countries' revenue (Fatah, Othman &
Abdullah, 2012). Mining is another economic activity in Kuantan city; the city is rich in mineral
resources, including petroleum, aluminum, tin, and other metals. These natural resources are the
main boosters of the economic development of the city. Trading activities and fishing activities
are also important in Kuantan. The availability of big lakes and oceans makes fishing the most
effective source of food. They import fish and fisheries products, thus generating income and

offering employment in foreign exchange. Entrepreneurship and businesses are other sources of
income for individuals in the city. These businesses deal with various products and services, and
this creates more work opportunities in the city.
Motivation And Urban Development Policies
The economic factors that led to the city's development are the fact that it is situated near
the port, which allows easy movement of critical exports to other countries like Singapore.
Further, the city was motivated by the availability of a good environment for conducting
business; this eventually resulted in the city's growth from a small town. The city was established
after the influx of the traders and miners as it is situated near the Sungai Lembing and Gambang.
Furthermore, the rubber plantation is among the economic factors that motivated the growth of
the city. Demographic factors are that motivated the development of the city is the fact it is
situated near the critical resources, which attracted many individuals from in and out of Malaysia
(Fatah, Othman & Abdullah, 2012). The high population resulted in a township formation
because people needed to trade with each other and exchange goods and services. The political
factors that led to the growth and development of this city are the availability of good leadership
in the region. This ensured political stability as well as law and order that created a good climate
for the business. The government established a security sense, which ensured that both the
minors and traders were well protected from various types of risks and threats. Also, taxation
from the government was relatively low to the extent that it provided the traders with a lot of
flexibility that promoted growth. Also, the international policies of the country allowed
immigration from various countries, including China and India; this motivated the influx of
immigrants who were interested in rubber and mining.

The city is identified with a warm and friendly climate; this is one of the important
environmental factors that make a city habitable. Furthermore, the city is situated near the river,
which is important because it is a source of food, water, and transport to other parts of the
country. Water is the key resource that is important for human survival; its availability near a
mine and the farms made it possible to establish a city (Fig. 2). The city is 10M above sea level;
this makes its climate categorized as tropical. It is a city with a heavy amount of rainfall. Even
when other regions experience dry seasons, the city still experiences heavy rainfall. The average
yearly temperature is 26.6 °C/ 79.8 °F (Fatah, Othman & Abdullah, 2012). The suitable climate
in the region promoted farming and other economic activities, which promot...
