School health is an inclusive attempt to create, execute, and evaluate health care delivery
structure within the learning institutions and communities. School health provides each learner
with the resources needed to prosper in healthy surroundings. School health includes; beneficial
learning and services, counseling services, nutrition and food services, etc.
History of school health practice
For over one hundred and fifty years, learning institutions in the United States have
tackled their learners' health and well-being. Attempts to introduce health in learning institutions
were secluded and sparse in the mid-1800s. In 1850, Lemuel Shattuck’s report formed the base
for school health programs (Allensworth & Crosset, 2020). According to Shattuck’s findings,
every young person should be educated on guarding their own and others' health lives. In New
York City, the health board had already established sanitary inspection for infectious diseases in
learning institutions by the late 1860s. Health examination in schools became institutionalized by
the end of the 19th century with medical inspectors' replacement with school nurses. The
