Description
Instructions
The instructions for the assignment can be found at https://www.google.com/earth/outreach/learn/visualize-your-data-on-a-custom-map-using-google-my-maps/
Just follow the instructions at the above link. At the end of the exercise it will ask you to share the map. You can share the map with me through Google Drive or you can email me your map link. Either way is fine. Your map is what I will be grading so make sure you share it with me. The instructions will ask you to use symbols to show the location of sharks on the map. Do not feel as if you need to use the same symbols or color schemes that Google ask you to use. For example, if google asks you to use a little-fin symbol to represent shark on a map, you can use another symbol if you like.
This assignment asks you to make a map using Google’s map making program which is called “My Maps.” The instructions where written by Google and they are pretty good. The instructions work better on desktop computers and laptops, so if you are using a mobile device the instructions may look slightly different than what you are seeing on your device. Do not be afraid to click around on the buttons in the “My Maps Program” if you need to.
If
you have issues completing this assignment, please let me know and I
will help you. You can write me an email asking for help or we can
schedule a time to meet in a voice chat and I will help you. Geographic
information systems and displaying data on maps has become such an
important part of today’s society that I want you to have a handle on
these fundamentals. The
exercise will ask you to import two spreadsheets that contain data
about shark sightings into a map. After you import the data you will be
asked to do things like change the symbols of the data, name the data,
and correct a few mistakes in the data. After you complete the exercise,
you will have created a shareable map that shows the location of where
sharks have been spotted.
