While it is not easy to trace the origin of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIS), their
emergence is closely related to the collection and production of geospatial data, and the
advancement of computer technologies and surveying. The past decade has experienced many of
these advancements. Such include GPS locations, remote sensing images, and many more.
Government agencies such as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
and the US Geological Survey (USGS) use such advancements in the derivation of products and
collection of geospatial data such as land cover data, hydrological features, topographical maps,
and oceanic characteristics (Li, Wang & Bhatia, 2016). The general public particularly users of
