Reflection Paper On COVID-19
COVID-19 has unbalanced our lifestyles by putting us through unprecedented stress,
social isolation, and the fear of both death and starvation. People have lost their jobs as
companies went through a sudden loss of funds. Layoffs were made on a global scale as
countless people lost their livelihoods and were forced indoors to prevent the spread of the viral
disease (Eagleston, 2020). For this reflective paper, I have recalled how my life has been over
the last few months and have compared it to a former colleague who was working at the same
firm before being laid off altogether. The budget for salary reimbursement also crashed over the
first month, taking away any hope of reassignment. Getting laid off from a job induces several
episodes of depression and anxiety under normal circumstances (Aaronson & Edelberg, 2020).
This being a special case, was even worse as there was no clear view of the span of the
pandemic. Regardless of this elevated sense of danger, life has flourished and survived for many
around the world who were hopeless at first (Aaronson & Edelberg, 2020). Consequently, the
experience with COVID-19 has been a mixed bag of emotions, both positive and negative at
times.
The name of the interviewee is Caleb Swift, who is 23 years old. He is a former colleague
turned fast friend who went through the same phase of life as myself as we were both laid off
together. Caleb started by saying that he was extremely anxious at first when he got laid off at
the same time as his parents lost their jobs. As the corporate world closed its doors on both him
and his parents, Caleb grew anxious and worried about his family's survival. The initial days of
the pandemic and social isolation were the worst as no one knew what fate future held. Caleb
added that he would regularly go through depressive thoughts and panic attacks at night during
the first two weeks of social isolation as his mind wandered over the tragic economic realities of
