High-speed rails (HSR) are a type of rail transport that operates at a much higher speed
than the traditional rail traffic. They are typically built using the standard gauge track and do not
have at-grade crossings. According to the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the EC
Directive 96/58, high-speed rails are systems of rolling stock and infrastructure that operate at
more than 250 km/h on new tracks or 200 km/h on older ones (Nunno, 2018). What stands out
with high-speed rails is using a continuous welded rail, which helps lower the track vibrations
and other inconsistencies between the rails segments allowing the train to pass at much higher
speeds. Other characteristics include curves with a radius of more than 4.5 km and lines capable
of running for 350 km/h on a stretch of 7 to 9 kilometers (Railsystem, 2015). Other features
include in-cab signals, driven by overhead electric lines, and do not have level crossings. That
type of rail can be found in different parts of the globe, but perhaps the most famous ones are in
Japan. For example, the Shinkansen lines are run at speeds of more than 260 km/h or 160 mph,
