Application of Nursing Theory to Practice, health and medicine homework help

Question Description

You are a professional nurse caring for Mr. R, a 58-year-old patient who recently underwent surgery for colon cancer resulting in a temporary colostomy. Select one of the assigned or unassigned nursing theories from our textbook and address the following:

  • How you would provide professional nursing care for Mr. R. using the theory you have selected. Be sure to use terminology from the selected nursing theory to explain your interventions.
  • Relate application of legal and/or ethical standards to this case study.

Note: There may be further questions from the instructor later in the week to help build upon your answers to further develop this scenario

Four theories are the focus of this course.

  • Systems theory (as cited in Hood, 2014)
  • Roy's adaptation theory (as cited in Hood, 2014)
  • Orem's self-care deficit theory (as cited in Hood, 2014)
  • Benner’s novice to expert theory (as cited in Hood, 2014)

As you read about each of these theories, consider how you would apply each one in your own nursing practice.

Application of nursing theory
Colon resection is a serious operation which takes one several weeks to recover even in
conditions where everything goes well. The care takes seven to eight days in the hospital or
lesser days in case the operation procedure is conducted laparoscopically. It generally takes
seven to eight weeks before full recovery and before one feels normal again, alternatively this
may be shorter for as low as around four to five weeks in case of laparoscopic. This needs a lot
of professional nursing care as from immediately after the operation to the point the patient is at
home. This is done to ensure the patient is free from excess pain, stoma problems, infections
associated with the wound and other complications related to colostomy. All these require keen
nursing care and the best nursing theory that would be most applicable is Roy’s adaptation
According to this theory, people are bio-psycho-social beings and are ever in interaction with
their changing environment (Hood, 2014). They are expected to respond positively to the

changing environments. Because Roy’s concept is based on humanistic approach, the theory

professional nursing care (Hood, 2014). It is important for regular checks of temperature, oxygen
saturation level, blood pressure, pulse rate and breathing rate which are considered internal
environments of a patient and which takes a nursing care to help a patient adapt. These tests are
meant to determine the adaptation level of the patient, other assessments ...
