Stem Cell Research
Stem cell research is a concept that has gained popularity in the recent past. Research has indicated
that successful research int stem cell therapy could greatly help the medical industry develop
treatment for numerous vexing diseases. Stem cells refer to blank cells or cells that are
undifferentiated in a person’s body. These cells have the ability to grow into cells hat can serve
various functions in several parts of a person’s body. Many of the cells in a person’s body are
differentiated. This means that these cells can only perform specific purposes in a person’s body.
An excellent example of these are the red blood cells which are meant to transport oxygen through
a person’s blood.
Every human being started out as one cell, the zygote commonly known as the fertilized egg. The
zygote then proceeds and gets divided into two cells which get divided again into four cells and
the process continues. Finally, all the formed cells begin differentiating as each takes up a different
role in different parts of the body. The process through which different cells take up different roles
in a person’s body is known as differentiation. When cells get differentiated, they stick to that role
in the body and cannot take up any other function in the body.
Stem cells are formed and are not differentiated. Stem cells can divide themselves and make an
infinite number of copies of themselves through their ability to divide. The other cells in the body
only have the ability to make limited copies of themselves. Once they make the limited copies,
they start to break down. Once stem cells begin to divide themselves, they have two option; they
can either stay as a stem cell and continue its multiplication or they can become differentiated cells
and take up specific functions in the person’s body. These cells can turn to be muscle cells or even
red blood cells.
There are numerous potential uses of stem cells. The uses are associated with the cells’ ability to
turn and be used as various types of cells. This ability makes them be useful in the treatment and

3

understanding of different diseases. Stem cells can be used to come up with new cells in a
laboratory. These new cells in the laboratories can be used to repair any damaged organs or tissues
in a persons’ body. Stem cells can also be used to correct any organ parts that may be
malfunctioning. Also, stem cells can be used when researching for causes of generic defects in
body cells.
There has been intense research on stem cells and different studies have been conducted and
concluded based on the research. A research conducted on the nature of human adipose tissuederived mesenchymal stem cells, AT-MSCs portrayed some essential information on this kind of
stem cells. Different donors were used in this study and it was established that the donor’s age is
critical when conducting a study on the stem cells. Again, the cells also consider the donor’s Body
Mass Index, BMI and finally, they consider the donor’s age. All these factors were described as
causing differences in the expected results.
It was established that adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cell is an easy to acquire cell and
hence can be used in stem cell therapy due to the fact that it can be engineered to suit the desired
outcome. Another crucial factor that was established as having potential of causing a variation in
results is the method of preparation of the adipose tissue during the process. The adipose cell
properties among different people vary. It was established that the cell yields in younger donors
was higher than in older donors. The differences in the cell yield and cell ability may arise due to
the differences in methods used for separation of cells from tissue as well as the primary culture
protocols employed. However, recently, there have been debates on whether the donor’s BMI and
donor age affect the cell yield.
The cells while analyzed under identical conditions portrayed that the AT-MSCs’ growth from
younger people was more vigorous than from older people. The parts of the body from which the

4

cells were obtained from also presented a difference in the cells. Cells that were obtained from the
hip formed twice the number of colonies as compared to cells obtained from the abdomen. Cell
yield from donors between the ages of 30-39 years was significantly greater. Also, cells from
donors who are below 29 years old proliferated readily as compared to the cells of the people who
are over 40 years. People with a higher BMI had cells with a significantly higher osteogenic
differentiation while those with a BMI of over 30 had a higher level of adipogenic differentiation
as compared to those with a BMI of less than 25. Therefore, this study indicated that when selecting
the stem cells, it is essential to determine the kind of regeneration required and the variations
present in the different donors.
There are different kinds of stem cells. Stem cells are classified based on their origin. Under these,
they are categorized into three; embryonic, germinal and somatic. The cells are further classified
based...
