South Africa was one of the last countries in Africa to gain independence, though the
country became independent from the Great Britain on December 11, 1931, the British monarchy
remained head of the state. More than 3.5 million Africans, Asians, and Coloureds were removed
to the white areas and taken to land set aside for those specific groups. Hendrik Verwoerd who
was the Prime Minister of the country from 1958 up to 1966 ensured that his government
arrested the ANC and the PAC opposition leaders. The arrested people were charged with
treason and imprisoned for life.
The black opposition was led by the ANC in the 1950’s through which they drew the
freedom charter which was a program aimed at nonracist social democracy. The Africans who
were against the nonracist to the whites led the formation of the Pan-Africanist Congress in
1959. During the 1960’s, the apartheid rule was being implemented with the repression of the
opposition growing despite a lot of criticism from the world due to the country’s discriminatory
